Ethics Statement

Sander Lab Code of Ethics

The Sander Lab is committed to providing a welcoming working environment, whether in-person or online, whether in the lab, office, or field, that fosters open dialogue and the exchange of scientific ideas. The Sander Lab is committed to supporting members, collaborators, and students from diverse backgrounds, to promoting equity, and to fostering a culture of inclusion. Thus, lab members are expected to uphold these values in all of their professional activities, including in their teaching, scholarship, and service. Respectful conduct is expected of all members towards others, regardless of age or seniority, including from laboratories or research groups in direct competition.

The Sander Lab strives to create at its facilities, in the field, and online a working environment free from harassment and discrimination. Lab meetings should serve as an effective forum to consider and debate science-relevant viewpoints in a respectful, civil, and fair manner. Members of the Sander Lab will acknowledge others for work contributed; this includes not only professional scientists but also citizen scientists, technicians, volunteers, and collaborators external to our own lab or the University of Bonn.

An important goal of the Sander Lab is broadening participation because it fundamentally improves the quality of scientific research when scientists from different backgrounds participate. We recognize that broadening participation in the sciences requires continuous effort which consists of a sustained commitment to support the involvement of members, collaborators, and guest from all backgrounds (racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic), sexual orientations, gender identities, and physical abilities.

Member status in the Sander Lab is acquired by supervision agreements of BSc, MSc, and PhD theses, by employment within the lab as researcher or student assistant, and by joining the lab as an externally funded postdoctoral researcher. Collaborator status is obtained through joint research projects in the lab and in the field. The Sander Lab expects adherence to the same values, conduct, and goals as outlined above from its collaborators. Guest status is conferred on researchers and students visiting the lab from other institutions.
